Cartersville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc. (CVVRS) is a full service Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organization created, built, operated, and maintained by citizens of Cartersville, Virginia. Since its incorporation in 1997, CVVRS has advanced its services as personnel and resources have become available. CVVRS volunteers provide 24/7 coverage of 100 square miles in the Cartersville (northern Cumberland County) area, providing emergency services to almost 3,000 residents. We provide mutual aid to the adjacent counties of Powhatan, Goochland, Buckingham, Fluvanna, and Prince Edward. We also serve stand-by at events where illness or injury is likely (sports events, trail rides, and large community gatherings), and as an emergency shelter if needed.
The regular CVVRS Business Meeting is held at 7:30 pm the first Tuesday of each month at Cartersville Rescue Squad.
Cartersville Volunteer Rescue Squad is not the building or the equipment; it is the people who provide the service. CVVRS is an all-volunteer squad manned 24/7 by local residents. The squad currently has 29 active and 13 inactive members. We are always seeking new members.
Application for membership can be obtained by calling (804) 375-3399 and leaving a message with your name and address, by attending a meeting, or by talking with any member of the squad. The regular CVVRS Business Meeting is held at 7:30 pm the first Tuesday of each month at Cartersville Rescue Squad.
There are 7 classes of membership. The four classes for which anyone can apply:
Starting in 1976 as First Responders with Cartersville Volunteer Fire Department, a small group of citizens provided care until an ambulance could arrive from Cumberland Court House. Concerned by the problems delayed transport created, citizens began the process of incorporating as a separate EMS agency. In 1997, CVVRS became incorporated, became licensed to provide Basic Life Support, purchased its first ambulance, and began to transport.
With much community support and determination, land was purchased upon which to build a home for the squad. In 2001, we moved into our own building—built and almost entirely funded by local residents. CVVRS now has three ambulances and a first responder vehicle. One of the ambulances is 4-wheel drive for icy roads and off road farm, logging, hunting, and river bank incidents.
In 2008, the squad became licensed to include Advanced Life Support in its services.
As needed, we provide service to out-of-county residents who come to Cumberland’s state parks and state forests, swimmers and boaters on the James River, and drivers on the two major highways which dissect our county, Rt. 45 N/S and 60 E/W. Never far from our minds is a large natural gas tank farm in our area.
When? 3rd Saturday of each month; doors open 4:45 pm / games start 6:00 pm
